COURSE CURRICULUM
The Criminal Justice program requires students to complete a structured set of lower division, upper division, and elective courses that provide a comprehensive understanding of crime, law enforcement, courts, corrections, and public safety. The curriculum begins with required lower division courses totaling 60 units. These introductory courses provide students with foundational knowledge about the criminal justice system and its relationship with society. Students study topics such as Introduction to Criminal Justice and Society, which explores the structure and purpose of the justice system, Law of Crimes, which focuses on criminal law and legal principles, General Investigative Techniques, which introduces investigative procedures used in criminal cases, and The Community and the Justice System, which examines how communities interact with law enforcement and justice institutions. After completing the foundational coursework, students move into the upper division core courses that focus on advanced topics in criminal justice. These courses include Criminal Justice Research Methods, which develops students’ ability to conduct research and analyze data related to crime and justice issues, and Crime and Punishment, which examines theories of criminal behavior and societal responses to crime. Other core courses explore the structure and function of American courts, the law of arrest, search and seizure, corrections systems, policing in society, and justice and public safety administration. Students also take Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice, which examines modern challenges and developments affecting the justice system. In addition to the required core courses, students must complete 24 units of upper division electives. These electives allow students to specialize in particular areas of interest within the field. Options include courses related to criminal justice administration, investigation, corrections, offenses and offenders, and law. Additional courses from related disciplines such as sociology, psychology, political science, anthropology, and social work can also support a deeper understanding of crime and justice issues. Some students may also gain practical experience through internships or specialized topics courses.Overall, the program requires 60 units and provides both theoretical knowledge and applied learning opportunities. Through this curriculum, students develop analytical, legal, and administrative skills that prepare them for careers in law enforcement, corrections, public safety administration, or further study in criminal justice or law.
