COURSE CURRICULUM

The Construction Management program requires students to complete a comprehensive curriculum totaling 105 units. The coursework is divided into lower division courses, upper division courses, computer literacy requirements, and elective options. The program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in construction principles, business management, engineering fundamentals, and analytical skills necessary for managing construction projects effectively.The lower division portion of the program consists of 51 units and focuses on building foundational knowledge in construction, business, mathematics, and science. Students begin by studying subjects such as Construction Surveying and Layout, The Construction Industry, Fundamentals of Construction Management, Construction Materials and Processes, Construction Graphics, and Construction Documents. These courses introduce students to the construction field, technical drawing, and the materials and processes used in building projects. Students also complete Engineering Mechanics–Statics and Properties of Construction Materials, which provide essential engineering knowledge related to structural behavior and material performance.In addition to construction-focused courses, students take supporting courses in business and economics, including Accounting Fundamentals, Managerial Accounting, Introduction to Macroeconomic or Microeconomic Analysis, and Introduction to Business Law. Mathematics and science requirements include Calculus for the Social and Life Sciences, General Physics courses covering mechanics, heat, electricity, and magnetism, and an introductory statistics course. Environmental science is also included to help students understand the environmental context of construction activities. Students must also complete computer literacy requirements through courses in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation graphics to develop practical computer skills used in professional environments.The upper division curriculum consists of 45 units and focuses on advanced construction management topics and professional preparation. Students study areas such as Legal Aspects of Construction, Construction Labor Relations, Construction Operations and Methods Analysis, Construction Estimating, and Advanced Estimating and Bidding. Courses in Construction Project Management and Planning, Scheduling, and Control teach students how to manage large projects efficiently. Additional courses include Engineering Construction, Structures design, Soils and Foundations, and Principles of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The program culminates with a Senior Project that allows students to apply their knowledge to a comprehensive construction-related problem.Students also complete elective coursework to broaden their business knowledge. This includes one upper division business course and an additional course in areas such as business finance, marketing, or operations management. Overall, the curriculum prepares students with technical expertise, management knowledge, and professional skills needed for leadership roles in the construction industry.
