COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science requires students to complete a structured curriculum that builds strong foundations in programming, mathematics, computer systems, and advanced computing concepts. The program includes lower division coursework, mathematics and science requirements, upper division computer science courses, and elective options, with a total requirement of approximately 78 to 81 units within the major. Students must earn a minimum grade of C- or higher in all courses that count toward the Computer Science major to ensure adequate preparation for advanced topics.The program begins with required lower division courses that introduce students to the core principles of computer science. These courses include Programming Concepts and Methodology I and II, which focus on fundamental programming skills and problem-solving techniques. Students also complete Discrete Structures for Computer Science, which introduces mathematical reasoning and logic used in computing, along with Introduction to Computer Architecture and Systems Programming in UNIX, which help students understand how computer systems operate at both hardware and software levels.In addition to the computer science core, students must complete mathematics and science requirements totaling approximately 21 to 24 units. These courses include Calculus I and Calculus II, as well as General Physics: Mechanics. Students also complete a statistics course such as Introduction to Probability and Statistics or Statistics for Engineers. Additional mathematical study may include subjects like linear algebra, combinatorics, number theory, numerical analysis, or probability theory. Students also select a supporting science course from areas such as biology, chemistry, or physics to strengthen their scientific background.The upper division portion of the program focuses on advanced computer science topics and practical applications. Students study Data Structures and Algorithm Analysis, Computer Software Engineering, Object-Oriented Computer Graphics Programming, Database Management Systems, Computability and Formal Languages, Computer Organization, Computer Networking Fundamentals, and Operating System Principles. Ethical issues in computing are also addressed through Business and Computer Ethics. The program concludes with a two-part Senior Project sequence where students apply their knowledge to develop a substantial computing project.Students also complete a small number of professional development units such as seminars, internships, or fieldwork experiences. In addition, they must select 9 units of advanced computer science electives numbered 140 or above, allowing them to specialize in areas of interest within the field. Overall, the curriculum provides students with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary for careers in software development, systems design, networking, and other computing professions.
