COURSE CURRICULUM

The Civil Engineering program requires students to complete a total of 124 units, including lower division foundational courses, upper division engineering courses, and specialized electives. The curriculum is designed to gradually build students’ knowledge in mathematics, science, engineering principles, and civil engineering practice. During the lower division phase, which totals 65 units, students complete essential introductory courses that provide the academic foundation necessary for advanced engineering study. In the first year, students take courses such as Civil Engineering Seminar, Engineering Graphics and CAD, General Chemistry for Engineering, and Calculus I, along with general education courses that broaden their academic perspective. The second semester introduces Plane and Topographic Surveying with a laboratory component, Calculus II, and General Physics: Mechanics. These courses help students develop basic technical skills and an understanding of scientific principles relevant to engineering.In the sophomore year, the program continues to strengthen students’ technical background with courses such as Engineering Materials, Differential Equations for Science and Engineering, and General Physics: Electricity and Magnetism. Students also complete Analytic Mechanics: Statics, College Composition II, and Linear Algebra or Applied Linear Algebra. These courses build the analytical and mathematical abilities required for solving engineering problems and preparing students for upper division coursework.The upper division portion of the program consists of 59 units and focuses on advanced civil engineering topics and practical applications. During the junior year, students study subjects such as Computer Applications in Civil Engineering, Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials, Statistics for Engineers, and Fluid Mechanics. Additional courses include Engineering Geology, Water Resources Engineering with Hydraulics Laboratory, Principles of Environmental Engineering with laboratory work, and Introduction to Structural Analysis. In the senior year, students complete courses in Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering Practice, Soil Mechanics with laboratory, and Civil Engineering Project Skills. The program concludes with a Senior Project that allows students to apply their accumulated knowledge to a comprehensive engineering problem.Students must also complete several civil engineering electives, including at least two design electives. These electives allow students to specialize in areas such as structural design, transportation systems, water resources, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and earthquake engineering. Overall, the program prepares students with strong technical, analytical, and design skills necessary for professional careers in civil engineering.
