COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is structured to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in both theoretical and practical chemistry, preparing them for graduate study or careers in chemical, biotechnology, and other technical industries. The program combines rigorous lower-division coursework, advanced upper-division classes, and general education requirements to produce graduates with a strong analytical and laboratory skill set.The lower-division curriculum (44 units) establishes a core in general and organic chemistry, quantitative analysis, calculus, and physics. Students complete a sequence of physics courses covering mechanics, heat, light, sound, and electricity and magnetism, alongside a full calculus series (Calculus I-III), ensuring proficiency in the mathematical and physical sciences essential for chemical studies. General chemistry, organic chemistry lectures and laboratories, and quantitative analysis develop both conceptual understanding and practical laboratory skills. These courses also satisfy certain general education requirements.Upper-division courses (33 units) focus on advanced topics including inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, chemical instrumentation, organic synthesis, and biochemistry. Students choose electives in consultation with an advisor to tailor the program to individual interests, which may include computational chemistry, senior research, or advanced laboratory techniques. Courses such as CHEM 160A and 160B in biochemistry provide specialized knowledge in molecular structure, metabolism, and regulation. Certain mathematics, physics, or graduate-level courses can be applied toward chemistry electives with department approval.Additionally, students complete a broad set of general education courses totaling 43 units, covering English communication, quantitative reasoning, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences, and ethnic studies. Upper-division general education courses further ensure critical thinking, communication, and interdisciplinary skills.
