COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biological Sciences program requires students to complete a combination of lower division core courses, upper division core courses, and concentration coursework that together provide a strong and comprehensive education in biology. The lower division core, consisting of 37 to 41 units, builds the foundational scientific knowledge needed for advanced biological study. Students begin with core biology courses such as Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecology and Cells, Molecules and Genes, which introduce key biological principles including the diversity of life, evolutionary relationships, and the molecular basis of living systems. Chemistry is also an essential part of the curriculum, and students complete General Chemistry I and II followed by a course in organic chemistry, either a brief lecture course or a two-course sequence. In addition, students develop quantitative and analytical skills through coursework in calculus and statistics, while physics courses covering mechanics, heat, electricity, magnetism, and modern physics help students understand the physical principles that influence biological systems.At the upper division level, students complete 7 units of core coursework that focuses on scientific analysis and genetics. Introduction to Scientific Analysis helps students develop research methods, critical thinking skills, and the ability to interpret scientific data. The General Genetics course provides a deeper understanding of genetic principles, heredity, and the molecular mechanisms that control biological traits and variation.Students must also complete a concentration consisting of 29 to 37 units, allowing them to specialize in a particular area of biological science based on their interests and career goals. Available concentrations include General Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Cell and Molecular Biology, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation, Forensic Biology, and Microbiology. Each concentration provides specialized coursework that prepares students for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, environmental science, laboratory sciences, or forensic investigation. Overall, the program requires approximately 73 to 85 units and provides students with a strong scientific foundation, laboratory experience, and analytical skills that support both professional careers and advanced study in the biological sciences.
