COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Microbiology is designed to prepare students for careers in biotechnology, environmental science, pharmaceuticals, wastewater treatment, agriculture, and graduate study in microbiology for research and teaching. The program provides a strong foundation in the biological and physical sciences through 37–41 units of lower-division coursework, including biodiversity, molecular and cellular biology, general and organic chemistry, physics, mathematics, and statistics. Upper-division core courses such as Introduction to Scientific Analysis and General Genetics further develop analytical, laboratory, and critical thinking skills. The Microbiology concentration requires 34–36 units of specialized coursework, including Molecular Cell Biology, General Microbiology, General Virology, The Diversity of Microorganisms, Molecular Biology Research Experience, Quantitative Analysis, General Biochemistry, and the Biochemistry Laboratory. Students also select 5 units of electives in consultation with an advisor from areas such as Cell and Molecular Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science, and Infectious Disease, which may include Immunology, Forensic Biology, Advanced Laboratory Techniques, Pathogenic Bacteriology, Human Parasitology, and Epidemiology. Practical experience is emphasized through Biological Internships, Laboratory Teaching, Introductory Undergraduate Research, and Directed Readings, with limitations on how many internship or laboratory assistant units may count toward the major. In addition to major coursework, students complete 43 units of General Education across English communication, critical thinking, oral communication, mathematics and quantitative reasoning, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences, ethnic studies, and upper-division coursework in arts, social sciences, and mathematics or science. This comprehensive curriculum ensures students acquire both the theoretical knowledge and hands-on laboratory skills necessary for professional and academic advancement in microbiology. Graduates are well-prepared for entry-level technical positions, advanced research roles, or further study in microbiology, public health, and related scientific disciplines.
