COURSE CURRICULUM

The Clinical Laboratory Sciences concentration within the Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences is designed to prepare students for professional careers as Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) and to meet the undergraduate coursework requirements for eligibility to sit for the CLS licensure examination in California. The program emphasizes a strong foundation in biology, chemistry, and quantitative reasoning, providing students with both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills essential for clinical diagnostics. Students complete a rigorous lower-division core including courses in biodiversity, cellular and molecular biology, general chemistry, physics, mathematics, and statistics, followed by upper-division core courses in scientific analysis and genetics. The Clinical Laboratory Sciences concentration itself consists of 34 units of specialized coursework, covering molecular cell biology, clinical hematology, systemic physiology, general microbiology, pathogenic bacteriology, immunology, human parasitology, quantitative analysis, and general biochemistry with its associated laboratory. These courses ensure that students develop the technical competencies required to work in clinical laboratory settings, including handling, analyzing, and interpreting biological specimens.In addition to core and concentration courses, students may gain further experience through biological internships, laboratory teaching assistantships, research projects, and co-curricular activities, which enhance practical skills and professional readiness. The curriculum also allows for elective upper-division courses and may accommodate a minor in Chemistry if certain laboratory courses are completed. While completing the BS degree fulfills the educational requirements for CLS licensure eligibility, students must also complete a one-year, state-approved CLS internship to qualify for the licensure examination. Admission to these internships is competitive and not guaranteed. The program is complemented by comprehensive General Education requirements totaling 43 units, covering English communication, mathematics, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences, and ethnic studies. This broad education ensures students develop critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills alongside their scientific expertise, fully preparing them for careers in clinical laboratory science, biomedical research, and related health professions.
