COURSE CURRICULUM
The Political Science major is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of government, politics, and public policy while complementing a liberal arts education. The program emphasizes both theoretical foundations and practical applications, allowing students to analyze political systems, institutions, and behavior critically. The curriculum begins with lower division coursework, including Essentials of Government, which can be satisfied through POLS 1 or by earning a qualifying score on the AP American Government exam. Upper division courses build on this foundation, offering instruction in research methods, political thought, constitutional law, international politics, comparative politics, and public policy development. Students are encouraged to take POLS 170, Public Policy Development, in their final year to integrate their knowledge and prepare for professional or graduate-level work.Electives provide students with the flexibility to explore specialized areas within the discipline. These courses can be selected from fields such as Political Theory, Public Law and Judicial Studies, International and Comparative Politics, and American Government, Politics, and Policy. While students are required to complete 21 elective units, at least 18 must be upper division, ensuring advanced engagement with the subject matter. Seminars and internships are strongly recommended to offer practical experience and develop professional skills. Additionally, students may take a maximum of six units of POLS 195 internships, though only three units can count toward required upper division credit. The program also integrates General Education requirements, including English communication, mathematics, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences, and ethnic studies. These requirements ensure that graduates develop strong analytical, research, and communication skills, while fostering a broad-based understanding of cultural and social contexts. The Political Science major prepares students for diverse careers in government, law, public administration, policy analysis, international relations, journalism, and nonprofit sectors, as well as for further graduate study. By combining foundational knowledge, specialized electives, and experiential learning opportunities, the program equips students to analyze complex political issues and contribute effectively to public discourse, governance, and policy-making.
