COURSE CURRICULUM
The Philosophy program requires students to complete a total of 42 units through a combination of lower division courses, upper division core courses, and elective courses within the general philosophy concentration. The program begins with lower division courses that provide the basic foundation in philosophical reasoning and methods. Students complete courses such as Deductive Logic I and Philosophical Methods, which introduce formal logic, argument analysis, and the basic techniques used in philosophical inquiry. These courses help students develop the ability to analyze arguments, evaluate evidence, and think critically about complex issues. After completing the introductory courses, students move to the upper division core curriculum, which consists of 19 units designed to deepen their understanding of major philosophical traditions and concepts. These courses include History of Ethics, History of Ancient Philosophy, and History of Modern Philosophy, which examine the development of philosophical thought from classical to modern periods. Additional courses such as Knowledge and Understanding, Metaphysics, and Ethical Theory focus on important philosophical questions about reality, knowledge, and morality. Students also complete a Senior Seminar in Philosophy, which allows them to apply their knowledge by engaging in advanced discussions, research, and analysis of philosophical topics. In addition to the core courses, students must complete 18 units within the General Philosophy concentration by selecting elective courses from an approved departmental list. Three courses can be selected from the broader elective list, while three additional courses must be chosen from advanced philosophy courses numbered 150 or above. These electives allow students to explore specialized areas such as political philosophy, philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, existentialism, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and bioethics. Other options include courses focusing on Asian philosophies, social and political philosophy, and contemporary philosophical topics. Students may also gain practical experience through opportunities such as philosophy internships, special topics courses, or research projects. Overall, the curriculum provides a comprehensive philosophical education that develops analytical reasoning, ethical understanding, and strong communication skills.
