COURSE CURRICULUM
The Science, Reason, and Values concentration in Philosophy requires students to complete 42 units, integrating lower division courses, upper division core courses, and concentration-specific electives. The program begins with lower division courses in Philosophical Methods and Deductive Logic I, which provide a foundation in critical reasoning, logical analysis, and the systematic evaluation of arguments. These courses prepare students to think rigorously and methodically about complex questions in both philosophy and science. The upper division core curriculum, totaling 19 units, deepens students’ understanding of key philosophical concepts and historical traditions. Courses such as History of Ethics, History of Ancient Philosophy, and History of Modern Philosophy explore the development of philosophical thought across different periods. Knowledge and Understanding, Metaphysics, and Ethical Theory focus on questions about reality, knowledge, and morality, while the Senior Seminar in Philosophy gives students the opportunity to apply their skills through advanced research, discussion, and writing.Within the Science, Reason, and Values concentration, students complete 18 units of specialized coursework. Core electives require students to select three of four courses, which include Science and Human Values, Philosophy of Science, Philosophy of the Social Sciences, and Rationality. These courses examine the philosophical and moral foundations of scientific practice, the nature of scientific reasoning, the evaluation of evidence, and the application of rational principles to both natural and social sciences. Additional electives allow students to choose three more courses from an approved list not previously taken, offering opportunities to study topics such as philosophy of medicine, bioethics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, epistemology, contemporary metaphysics, social and political philosophy, and specialized seminars in philosophy of science or social science. Internship opportunities further allow students to gain practical experience.Overall, the concentration provides a rigorous and interdisciplinary education that blends philosophical analysis with scientific inquiry. It prepares students to understand and evaluate the principles, methods, and ethical implications of science while developing strong analytical, decision-making, and communication skills applicable to graduate study or professional careers.
