COURSE CURRICULUM
The International Relations major provides students with a structured curriculum that balances foundational political science coursework with interdisciplinary studies and regional specialization. The program begins with a lower division requirement in Essentials of Government, which introduces students to the fundamental principles, structures, and functions of government in a domestic and global context. This course lays the groundwork for more advanced study in political science, particularly in comparative politics and international relations.Upper division requirements focus on the theoretical and methodological foundations of the discipline. Students take courses in political thought, international politics, international political economy, and comparative politics. These courses emphasize critical analysis, research methods, and a deeper understanding of global governance, conflict, cooperation, and policy-making. The major also includes a research methods course, which equips students with the tools necessary to analyze political data, evaluate scholarly work, and engage in independent research.Electives make up a substantial portion of the program, allowing students to tailor their studies according to their interests. Electives cover a wide range of topics including international law, United States foreign policy, nationalism, war and peace studies, globalization, human security, and intelligence. Students can also choose from approved courses in other departments, including anthropology, economics, geography, history, sociology, international business, and women’s and gender studies, to gain a broader understanding of the social, economic, and cultural factors that shape international relations. Up to three electives may include experiential learning options such as internships, UN simulations, or independent study, offering students practical experience in global political environments. This flexible yet comprehensive structure ensures that graduates are well-prepared for careers in diplomacy, international organizations, policy analysis, global business, intelligence, and advocacy. Students also gain a strong foundation for graduate studies in political science, law, international relations, or related fields. By combining core political science courses with interdisciplinary electives and practical experiences, the International Relations major cultivates analytical, research, and communication skills essential for addressing complex global challenges.
