COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics major requires students to complete a combination of pre-major courses, upper division core courses, and elective courses that build strong analytical and quantitative skills. The program begins with 12 units of pre-major required courses that introduce students to the fundamental concepts of economics and quantitative analysis. These courses include Introduction to Macroeconomic Analysis and Introduction to Microeconomic Analysis, which provide an understanding of how economies function at both national and individual market levels. Students also complete Modern Business Mathematics and Introduction to Statistics to develop the mathematical and statistical skills necessary for economic analysis and data interpretation.After completing the pre-major requirements, students move on to 15 units of upper division core courses that deepen their knowledge of economic theory and research methods. These courses include Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory and Intermediate Microeconomic Theory, which explore advanced models explaining economic behavior, production, consumption, and market interactions. Students must also take either History of Economic Thought or Economic History of the United States to gain historical insight into the development of economic ideas and policies. In addition, Quantitative Economic Analysis introduces students to mathematical and statistical techniques used to study economic data, while Economic Research Methods prepares students to conduct independent economic research and analyze real-world economic issues.Students must also complete 18 units of upper division economics electives, selected in consultation with a faculty advisor. These electives allow students to explore specialized topics in economics such as environmental economics, urban economics, public finance, international economics, and other advanced areas depending on course availability. The flexibility in electives allows students to tailor the program to their personal interests and career goals.Overall, the Economics major requires a total of 45 units. Students must earn a minimum grade of C in all required courses, and the Economic Research Methods course must be completed during the student’s graduating semester after finishing key core courses. Students interested in graduate study in economics are encouraged to take additional courses in econometrics, calculus, and statistics. In addition to the major requirements, students must complete 43 units of general education courses that cover communication, quantitative reasoning, arts and humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and interdisciplinary studies. This curriculum prepares students for careers in business, government, research, finance, and policy analysis.
