COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry at Sacramento State offers a general track without a concentration, designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in chemistry, mathematics, and physics. The program begins with core coursework totaling 39 to 43 units, including General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II with laboratory components, Quantitative Analysis, and Calculus I and II. Students also complete a physics sequence, either PHYS 5A & 5B or PHYS 11A, 11B, & 11C, covering mechanics, heat, light, sound, electricity, and magnetism. These core courses satisfy both major and general education requirements, and students must achieve a minimum grade of “C” or pass a placement exam where required, ensuring readiness for advanced studies.For students choosing the general BA track without a concentration, an additional 25 upper-division units are required, which include advanced Physical Chemistry lectures (CHEM 140A & 140B), Calculus III, and other chemistry electives. Students must complete at least two laboratory courses and may select additional courses in consultation with an advisor. Graduate-level courses may also be applied toward electives with appropriate approvals, allowing for customization based on career goals or academic interests.The program integrates general education requirements totaling 43 units, encompassing English communication, mathematics, arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, physical and biological sciences, ethnic studies, and upper-division courses in relevant areas.
