COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry at Sacramento State offers students the option of pursuing a general chemistry degree or specializing in Biochemistry. The core curriculum, totaling 39–43 units, establishes a strong foundation in chemical principles, mathematics, and physics. Core courses include General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II with laboratory experience, Quantitative Analysis, and Calculus I and II. Students also choose a physics sequence, either a two-course series covering mechanics, heat, sound, light, electricity, and magnetism, or a three-course sequence providing a more detailed exploration of these topics. Successful completion of core courses develops essential analytical, laboratory, and problem-solving skills required for advanced study in chemistry and related scientific fields.The Biochemistry concentration, comprising 32–34 units, integrates molecular and cellular biology with chemical principles to prepare students for careers in biomedical research, biotechnology, and health sciences. Required courses include introductory biology (Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecology; Cells, Molecules, and Genes) and advanced chemistry courses such as Physical Chemistry, General and Advanced Biochemistry Laboratories, and the Structure and Function of Biological Molecules. Students must also complete six units of upper-division biology electives, which may include Molecular Cell Biology, Systemic Physiology, General Microbiology, Molecular Biology Research Experience, or General Genetics. This combination ensures a strong understanding of biochemical processes and laboratory techniques essential for both professional practice and graduate study.In addition to major-specific coursework, all students complete 43 units of General Education requirements across six areas, including English Communication, Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning, Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Physical and Biological Sciences, and Ethnic Studies. Upper-division general education courses further enhance critical thinking and interdisciplinary understanding. The program provides a balanced education combining rigorous scientific training with a broad liberal arts foundation, preparing graduates for careers in research, industry, healthcare, or advanced study in graduate and professional programs such as medicine, pharmacy, and biotechnology.
