COURSE CURRICULUM
The Biological Sciences program requires students to complete a combination of lower division foundational courses, upper division core courses, and elective coursework that together provide a comprehensive understanding of biological principles. The program begins with 37 to 41 units of lower division coursework designed to establish a strong background in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. Core biology courses include Biodiversity, Evolution and Ecology and Cells, Molecules and Genes, which introduce students to the diversity of life, evolutionary processes, and the molecular foundations of living organisms. Students also complete General Chemistry I and II to develop an understanding of chemical principles that are essential for studying biological systems. In addition, students must complete coursework in organic chemistry, selecting either a brief organic chemistry lecture course or a two-course organic chemistry sequence. Mathematical and quantitative skills are also emphasized through courses in calculus and statistics, while physics courses provide knowledge about mechanics, energy, and physical processes relevant to biological systems. At the upper division level, students complete 23 units of advanced coursework that focuses on deeper scientific analysis and specialized areas of biology. Courses such as Introduction to Scientific Analysis help students develop research and analytical skills used in scientific investigation. Other core subjects include Molecular Cell Biology, General Microbiology, General Ecology, General Genetics, and Evolution. These courses explore topics ranging from cellular processes and microbial life to ecological interactions and genetic inheritance. Students also complete a course in General Biochemistry, which examines the chemical processes that occur within living organisms and connects biological concepts with molecular and chemical principles. In addition to the required core courses, students must complete 3 units of elective coursework from a group of structure and function focused biology courses. These electives allow students to explore specialized topics such as human reproduction physiology, advanced human anatomy, neuroanatomy, developmental biology, plant anatomy and physiology, histology, systemic physiology, neurophysiology, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, or endocrinology. Overall, the program requires approximately 63 to 67 units and provides students with strong scientific knowledge, laboratory skills, and analytical abilities that prepare them for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, environmental science, or advanced graduate study in biological sciences.
