COURSE CURRICULUM
The Asian Studies major requires students to complete between 39 and 43 units of coursework designed to provide a comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of Asia’s cultures, histories, and contemporary issues. The curriculum begins with a set of core requirements totaling 6 units. These include Asia in the World Today and Modernity and Globalization in Asia. These courses introduce students to the major themes of the program, including Asia’s role in global affairs, the impact of modernization and globalization on Asian societies, and the connections between Asian regions and the rest of the world.Students must also complete 6 units of foundational core courses by selecting two courses from subjects such as Traditional Asian Art, Modern and Contemporary Asian Art, Asian Civilizations, and Arts and Ideas of Asia. These courses provide students with historical and cultural background knowledge about the development of Asian societies, artistic traditions, and philosophical ideas. By studying these foundational topics, students gain a deeper appreciation for the cultural and intellectual heritage of the region. The program also includes a culminating core component of 6 units. Students select two advanced courses that focus on contemporary themes and analytical perspectives. These may include topics such as the anthropology of contemporary Asia, Asian diaspora and migration, nationalism in Asia, or social movements in the region. These courses encourage students to critically examine current social and political developments and understand how historical processes influence modern Asian societies. In addition to the core requirements, students must complete 21 to 25 units of electives. Students select at least seven courses from a variety of regional and thematic groups, ensuring that courses come from at least four different groups. These groups include China, Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, Asian American Studies, and Pan-Asian topics. Courses within these groups cover subjects such as literature, philosophy, religion, politics, art, and social structures. Students may also take language courses such as Mandarin, Japanese, or Korean, as language study is strongly encouraged to strengthen cultural understanding and regional expertise.Overall, the program emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and global awareness. In addition to major requirements, students must also complete general education coursework that develops communication, analytical reasoning, and scientific literacy. Together, these requirements prepare students with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers or advanced studies related to Asia and its role in the global community.
