COURSE CURRICULUM

The Pacific Asia Studies major requires students to complete a total of 36 units that provide an interdisciplinary understanding of the cultures, histories, and political systems of countries located along the Pacific Rim. The program begins with 15 units of core courses that establish a strong academic foundation in Asian history, culture, and global developments. Students study topics such as Traditional Asian Art or Modern and Contemporary Asian Art, Asian Civilizations, and Arts and Ideas of Asia, which introduce important artistic traditions, philosophical ideas, and historical developments across Asian societies. In addition, students complete a course focusing on modern transformations in the region, such as Modernity and Globalization in Asia or a seminar examining recent interpretations of Asian history. A course in Asian politics or World Music of Asia further broadens students’ understanding of political systems, cultural expressions, and international relationships within the region.Students must also complete 12 units within a chosen regional concentration. Available concentrations include Japanese Studies, Chinese Studies, Korean Studies, and South and Southeast Asian Studies. Each concentration allows students to focus on the history, society, and cultural traditions of a specific region. For example, the Japanese Studies concentration may include courses such as Japanese Culture and Society, Cultural History of Japan, Modern Japan, The History of Manga, and Modern Japanese Literature and Culture. Through these courses, students gain deeper knowledge of the selected region’s historical development, cultural expressions, and social structures.In addition to core and concentration requirements, students must complete 9 units of electives selected from three different thematic or regional groups. These groups include Japan, China, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, Asian American studies, Pan-Asian topics, advanced language courses, and fieldwork or internship opportunities. This structure encourages students to explore multiple regions and perspectives while building a broad understanding of Asia. Students may not choose electives from the same group as their concentration to ensure academic diversity.A language proficiency requirement is also an essential part of the program. Students must demonstrate proficiency equivalent to four semesters of an appropriate Asian language such as Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Punjabi. This requirement may be fulfilled through coursework or by passing a proficiency examination administered by the Department of Foreign Languages. Language training enhances students’ cultural awareness and strengthens their ability to engage with primary sources and communicate within the region. In addition to major coursework, students must complete general education requirements that develop communication, analytical thinking, and scientific literacy, providing a well-rounded academic experience.
