ABOUT UNIVERSITY

California State University, Sacramento is a public university located in Sacramento, California, and is part of the California State University system. Established in 1947 as Sacramento State College, the institution was created during a period of high demand for higher education following World War II. It began with only 235 students attending classes that were initially held at Sacramento Junior College. Over time, the university expanded significantly and moved to its permanent campus along the American River in the early 1950s. Today the university enrolls more than 30,000 students annually and has an alumni network of over 290,000 graduates. Sacramento State offers a wide range of academic opportunities, including more than 150 bachelor’s degree programs, nearly 70 master’s programs, multiple teaching credentials, and several doctoral degrees across diverse fields of study. The campus covers approximately 305 acres and is known for its natural environment, with thousands of trees and a large arboretum that contributes to its recognition as a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. The university also hosts the historic Julia Morgan House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sacramento State is recognized as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and an Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution, and it has also been acknowledged by the California Legislative Assembly as the state’s first Black-Serving Institution. Throughout its history the university has continued to grow academically, physically, and culturally, adding major facilities, expanding academic programs, and strengthening its role as a leading public university in the region. Today Sacramento State remains the only comprehensive four-year public university located in the city of Sacramento, serving as a major center for education, research, and community engagement while preparing thousands of students each year for professional careers and advanced study.
