COURSE CURRICULUM

The mathematics major with a more intensive track at Cal Lutheran requires a minimum of 45 mathematics credits, with at least 25 credits at the upper-division level. Including required supporting coursework, students complete a total of 59 credits. Only mathematics courses numbered 200 or higher are applicable toward the major. The core of the program emphasizes both theoretical foundations and analytical rigor. Required courses include Discrete Mathematics, Calculus I (or Applied Calculus), Calculus II and III, as well as either Elementary Mathematical Analysis or Number Theory. Students must also complete either Real Analysis or Abstract Algebra, along with a capstone course that culminates their mathematical studies.In addition to the core courses, students take four upper-division mathematics classes, at least three of which must be 4 credits (one may be 3 credits). They also choose one additional elective in mathematics, which may be either upper or lower division. This flexible structure allows students to explore diverse areas of mathematics or tailor their studies to specific interests or career goals.Supporting coursework is an essential part of the degree and includes two semesters of calculus-based physics with accompanying labs. Students must also complete one approved programming course at the 200-level or higher, such as Introduction to Computer Programming or Programming for Scientists, ensuring they gain computational skills relevant to modern mathematical work.The program strongly recommends taking the capstone preparation course, MATH 474, to help students develop a focused and polished final project. This major is well-suited for students preparing for graduate studies or technical careers in fields such as data science, engineering, academia, or applied research. The curriculum provides a well-rounded foundation in both abstract reasoning and practical application, supported by interdisciplinary knowledge in physics and computer science.
