COURSE CURRICULUM

Cal Lutheran’s interdisciplinary major allows students to create a customized academic path by combining coursework from multiple departments to form a cohesive program tailored to their unique interests and career goals. This major requires a minimum of 40 total credits, with at least 24 credits at the upper-division level. To maintain academic diversity, no more than 30 credits may come from a single department, and the major should typically include courses from at least three different academic departments.Students are expected to declare their interdisciplinary major by the second semester of their junior year. However, exceptions may be granted at the discretion of the faculty advisory committee and the appropriate academic dean. With the help of a faculty advisor, students must submit a formal application to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. This application includes a written rationale explaining the purpose and structure of the major, as well as a detailed list of all proposed courses, organized by department. The rationale must demonstrate how the selected courses work together to form a unified field of study, rather than a collection of unrelated topics.Once the proposal is submitted, the Dean will appoint a committee of at least three faculty members, including at least one from each department represented in the major, to review the plan. If approved, the proposal is forwarded to the Dean and the Registrar for final approval. Any subsequent changes to the student’s course plan must be submitted in writing and approved by the advisory committee, Dean, and Registrar, ensuring the academic integrity and coherence of the interdisciplinary major throughout the student’s academic journey.
