COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry degree at Cal Lutheran requires students to complete a minimum of 40 credits in chemistry courses, including 28 upper-division credits, alongside 16 to 18 supporting credits, totaling 56 to 58 credits for graduation. The core curriculum provides a comprehensive foundation in chemistry, beginning with General Chemistry I and II (CHEM 151 and 152) and their respective labs, ensuring students develop a strong grasp of fundamental chemical principles and laboratory techniques. Students then advance to more specialized courses such as Quantitative Analysis, Chemical Instrumentation, Organic Chemistry (CHEM 331 and 332) with labs, and Physical Chemistry with corresponding laboratory courses (CHEM 405/406). A Capstone Seminar (CHEM 485) serves as a culminating experience, integrating knowledge gained throughout the program. Additionally, students are required to complete 2 credits of chemistry electives to explore areas of personal or professional interest.Supporting courses include Calculus I and II (MATH 251 and 252) to provide essential mathematical skills necessary for understanding chemical concepts. Students also choose between two physics sequences—General Physics I and II with labs or Physics for Scientists and Engineers I and II with labs—to build a solid understanding of physical principles relevant to chemistry.The program encourages students to take recommended courses such as Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (CHEM 411), Calculus III (MATH 261), and Differential Equations (MATH 265) to deepen their knowledge and prepare for advanced study or professional careers. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge laboratory instruments, including spectrophotometers and chromatography equipment, preparing them for research and industry roles. Overall, the degree equips students with a rigorous scientific education and practical skills essential for careers in chemistry, graduate school, or related scientific fields.
