COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sports Communication degree requires a minimum of 37 credits, including at least 24 upper-division credits, providing students with a solid foundation and advanced expertise in the dynamic field of sports media and communication. The program begins with core courses such as Introduction to Mass Communication, Media Writing, Sports, Media and Society, Principles of Public Relations, Communication Theories as a capstone, and Research Methods. These courses are designed to develop students’ understanding of mass communication principles, media writing skills, and the relationship between sports and society, while also introducing research techniques essential for effective communication analysis. To enhance practical experience and professional readiness, students must select either an Independent Study or Internship, offering hands-on opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings. Furthermore, students choose 8 credits from a diverse selection of specialized courses, including Content Creation for Digital Platforms, Website Design and Publishing, Broadcast Sports Production, Sports-Related Marketing, News Reporting Experience, Radio/Podcast Experience, Advanced Photography, and Introduction to Sports Management. These electives allow students to explore various aspects of sports communication, from digital media production to marketing and brand management. The program also offers flexibility with a required selection of one additional course from options such as Voice Development, Persuasive Communication, Radio Industry, Intercultural Communication, International Media, Legal Issues & the New Media, and Sport Psychology. This diverse curriculum not only sharpens communication skills but also helps students develop a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, legal, and psychological factors influencing sports communication today.
