COURSE CURRICULUM

The Spanish major requires a minimum of 32 credits, all of which must be upper-division courses, ensuring advanced proficiency in both language and cultural studies. Core required courses include SPAN 301: Conversation and Composition, which focuses on developing strong communication skills in Spanish. Students also take SPAN 315: Spanish Literature and Society and SPAN 325: Spanish American Literature and Society, which explore literary works and cultural contexts from Spain and Latin America. SPAN 401: Applied Linguistics and Grammar deepens understanding of the language’s structure, enhancing linguistic competence. The program culminates with SPAN 405: Latin-American Culture and Civilization, a capstone course that integrates cultural, historical, and social themes to provide a comprehensive understanding of Latin American societies.In addition to the required courses, students must complete 12 elective credits. These include at least one 400-level Spanish course and two additional upper-division Spanish courses. The department allows flexibility by permitting, under certain conditions, the substitution of a relevant upper-division course from another discipline, such as POLS 443 (a political science course), to broaden academic perspectives. To graduate, students must also pass an oral proficiency exam, ensuring they can effectively communicate in Spanish in both academic and real-world settings. This combination of coursework and assessment equips students with strong language skills, cultural knowledge, and critical thinking abilities, preparing them for careers or further studies involving Spanish language and Hispanic cultures.
