COURSE CURRICULUM

The Religion major offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to provide students with a deep and broad understanding of religious traditions, texts, ethics, and practices. The program requires a minimum of 36 credits, beginning with foundational courses that explore religion, identity, and vocation, where students choose between RLTH 100 or RLTH 300. Students also complete research-focused courses, RLTH 493 and RLTH 494, which develop skills in religious research methods and academic writing.The core of the program is divided into three essential areas: Sacred Literature and Languages, Theology, Ethics and the Arts, and Religious Traditions. In the Sacred Literature and Languages category, students study ancient religious texts through courses such as Classical Hebrew, Biblical Greek, and examinations of sacred scriptures in their historical contexts. This study provides a strong foundation for understanding religious writings in their original languages and cultural settings.The Theology, Ethics, and Arts category offers courses that address the complex ethical questions and theological ideas within various religious traditions. Topics include Christian thought, liberation theology, queer theology, business ethics, and religion’s interaction with politics, food, and the environment. These courses emphasize the role of religion in shaping ethical perspectives and societal values.In the Religious Traditions area, students explore the history, beliefs, and practices of diverse faiths such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Sikhism, and Indigenous spirituality. This section includes courses on medieval Christianity, the American religious experience, women and religion, and spirituality in different cultural contexts. By engaging with multiple traditions, students develop an appreciation for religious diversity and interfaith dialogue.Overall, the program’s flexible structure allows students to tailor their studies to their interests while gaining critical analytical skills and cultural competence. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in education, social services, public administration, and any field requiring a nuanced understanding of religion’s role in society.
