COURSE CURRICULUM

The political science major requires a minimum of 36 credits, with at least 20 of those being upper division. Core courses include POLS 320 (Scope and Methods of Political Science) and POLS 476 (Capstone). Students must also select two foundational courses from options such as American Government, Public Policy, Global Studies, or Political Science introduction, plus one course focusing on political thought—ancient, modern, or American. An essential component is the experiential learning requirement, which can be fulfilled through study abroad, internships, service learning, or specialized courses like Model United Nations or an experiential practicum.Students choose one of three emphasis areas to complete their degree: General, International Relations, or Law and Public Policy. The General Emphasis allows flexibility by applying any political science course toward the major and requires 36 credits with 20 upper division credits. The International Relations Emphasis also requires 36 credits, including courses such as European Government, International Relations, American Foreign Policy, and Comparative Politics, plus regional studies focusing on Latin America, the Middle East, East Asia, or Africa.The Law and Public Policy Emphasis is designed for students interested in legal and policy issues, requiring POLS 207 (Contemporary Issues in Public Policy) and a selection of courses covering topics like multiculturalism, public administration, civil rights, social movements, and environmental law. Students also select from law-focused courses such as Introduction to Law, American Constitutional Law, and International Law and Organization.Overall, the program offers a comprehensive curriculum blending theory, methods, practical experience, and specialized study to prepare students for careers in government, law, public policy, or international affairs.
