COURSE CURRICULUM

The mathematics major at Cal Lutheran requires a minimum of 41 credits in mathematics coursework, with at least 21 credits at the upper-division level. Including supporting courses, students complete a total of 53 to 55 credits. The core curriculum is designed to build both theoretical knowledge and practical problem-solving skills. Foundational courses include Discrete Mathematics, Calculus I, II, and III, and a capstone experience through MATH 475. Students must also take one math elective, which can be upper or lower division, and three additional upper-division math courses, at least one of which must be 4 credits (though one 3-credit course is permitted). Additionally, students are required to take at least two of the following three courses: Elementary Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, and Number Theory, allowing them to deepen their understanding in specific areas of interest.To round out the major, students are required to complete one upper-division mathematical perspectives course, which must be approved by a faculty advisor. Supporting coursework is designed to provide interdisciplinary context and practical application. Students choose between two tracks: a Physics option, which includes two semesters of calculus-based physics with labs, or an Economics option, which includes a general economics course and one 400-level economics course such as Intermediate Macroeconomics, Intermediate Microeconomics, or Econometrics.The program also strongly recommends students take MATH 474, a capstone preparation course, as well as a programming course at the 200-level or higher—such as Introduction to Computer Programming or Programming for Scientists. For students interested in the sciences, general chemistry courses with labs are also recommended. Overall, the curriculum prepares students for graduate study or careers in mathematics, data science, economics, engineering, or education by offering a balance of theory, applied skills, and interdisciplinary learning.
