COURSE CURRICULUM

The education program offers a comprehensive range of courses designed to prepare future teachers with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to succeed in diverse classrooms. LSED 362, Teachers and Teaching, introduces students to the historical, social, and cultural foundations of American education, emphasizing the diversity of contemporary schooling and exploring major educational philosophies that influence teaching in a multicultural society. This course sets the stage by highlighting current trends and theoretical frameworks in education. Complementing this, LSED 382, Learners and Learning, focuses on helping students establish a personal mission and vision for teaching, while addressing key issues in education. A significant aspect of this course is the required 60 hours of hands-on service in a K-6 classroom, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings and gain valuable practical experience. LSED 402, Theories of Teaching and Learning, delves into the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical factors that affect child and adolescent development, academic achievement, student engagement, and well-being. It also explores effective teaching methods that promote these developmental goals. The course LSED 408, Children’s Literature and Composition, highlights the essential role every teacher plays in fostering literacy. It examines how children learn to read and write through their everyday experiences, with a focus on language development and linguistic diversity. LSED 414, Culturally Responsive Pedagogies, equips future educators with the tools to create inclusive classrooms by addressing race, class, and culture. Students learn strategies to affirm students’ cultural identities and build supportive, well-managed learning environments that respect diversity. Finally, LSED 416, Educational Measurement and Assessment, prepares students to understand and apply assessment theory and practices in K-12 education. It emphasizes the use of key assessment tools, including those related to psycho-educational evaluations and Individual Education Plans (IEPs), enabling teachers to design effective and individualized instruction tailored to student needs. Together, these courses provide a well-rounded foundation for effective and culturally responsive teaching.
