COURSE CURRICULUM

Cal Lutheran’s interdisciplinary major offers students the opportunity to design a personalized academic program that integrates coursework from multiple departments. This flexible option is ideal for students whose interests don’t align with a traditional major, allowing them to pursue a cohesive course of study that supports their academic and career goals. The interdisciplinary major requires a minimum of 40 credits, with at least 24 of those credits at the upper-division level. To ensure academic balance, no more than 30 credits may be taken from any one department, and the major must typically include coursework from at least three departments.Students are encouraged to declare the interdisciplinary major no later than the second semester of their junior year, though exceptions can be made with approval. With guidance from a faculty advisor, the student must submit a formal proposal to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. This proposal must include a clear rationale explaining how the selected courses form a unified major, rather than a random assortment of classes, as well as a complete list of the proposed courses organized by department.Once submitted, a faculty committee—consisting of at least three professors, including one from each department involved—will review the proposal. Upon approval, the final application is sent to the Dean and the Registrar for official recognition. If any changes are made to the program, the student must submit them in writing for review and approval. This process ensures that each interdisciplinary major is academically sound, intentionally designed, and aligned with the student’s long-term objectives.
