COURSE CURRICULUM

The Environmental Science major at Bellarmine is a rigorous program designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the life and physical sciences, preparing them for careers in environmental research, policy, and technology. In the first year, students begin with courses like Understanding Planet Earth and General College Chemistry I and II, alongside foundational general education classes in writing, government, philosophy, and history. The second year builds on this foundation with Principles of Biology, Organic Chemistry I, and Environmental Geology, along with coursework in literature, fine arts, and theology. In the third year, students advance to specialized courses including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), College or University Physics, Botany, and Environmental Justice, while also completing an internship that offers practical, hands-on experience in the field. Mathematics and statistics are incorporated to enhance students’ analytical skills. The fourth year includes Ecology, a research course, and a field course, emphasizing real-world scientific research and environmental application. The senior seminar and community engagement courses foster critical thinking and communication skills needed for professional success. Electives throughout the program allow for customization based on students’ interests. The program also encourages participation in research opportunities and flexible internship credits to gain practical experience. With a balanced curriculum of scientific knowledge, fieldwork, and interdisciplinary learning, Bellarmine’s Environmental Science major prepares students to address complex environmental challenges through research, policy, and sustainable solutions.
