COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology major in the Organismal Track at Bellarmine University is a four-year, 120-credit hour program designed to offer a broad and flexible education in the biological sciences, preparing students for a wide range of careers or graduate study. In the first year, students take foundational courses including Foundations in Biology, Principles of Biology, General College Chemistry I and II, Elementary Statistics, and English Composition, along with first-year experience seminars and a history course. The second year builds on this foundation with in-depth studies in Botany, Animal Diversity, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Organic Chemistry I, while also fulfilling general education requirements in social sciences, theology, and literature. In the third year, students explore more advanced biological topics through Ecology and biology electives, and begin physics coursework with College Physics I. Additional philosophy or theology electives, as well as open electives, offer flexibility to tailor the program to individual interests and goals. In the final year, students deepen their expertise with more biology electives, a course in Evolution, and complete their education with the Senior Comprehensive Exam and the Merici Community Engaged Seminar. General education in fine or performing arts and courses focused on intrinsic dignity and inclusivity ensure students graduate with a well-rounded liberal arts education. A variety of electives throughout the curriculum allow for further customization based on career aspirations, including preparation for teaching, environmental work, science communication, or graduate studies. The program emphasizes strong technical and analytical skills, critical thinking, and effective communication, while offering hands-on learning opportunities and close interaction with faculty. With its flexible, comprehensive structure, the Organismal Track provides students with a deep understanding of biological diversity and function, equipping them for success in a range of science-related professions.
