COURSE CURRICULUM

Avila University’s Pre-Licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.) program is a comprehensive and structured curriculum that combines foundational sciences, social sciences, and nursing-specific coursework to prepare students for a successful career in nursing. The program begins with prerequisite and general education courses such as General Microbiology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Nutrition, Pathophysiology, and developmental psychology. These courses establish a strong scientific and holistic understanding of the human body and health processes. Students are also required to complete one statistics course and one introductory social science course, allowing them to develop the analytical and societal awareness skills essential in nursing practice.The core of the nursing curriculum is organized into sequenced, semester-based nursing courses designed to progressively develop clinical competencies. Students begin with courses such as Foundations of Health & Illness Concepts I, Health Assessment, and Nursing Pharmacology. As they advance, they engage with more specialized areas including Gerontological Nursing, Women & Children Health & Illness Concepts, Psychosocial Nursing Concepts, and High Acuity Nursing. Development of the Professional Nurse I and II supports students in evolving their professional identity and nursing judgment.Hands-on learning is emphasized through multiple practicums (Practicum I, II, III, and the Capstone Practicum), where students gain real-world experience in various healthcare settings. The program also includes Evidence-Based Nursing Care and Population-Based Health Concepts, preparing graduates to apply research and serve diverse communities effectively. Overall, Avila’s B.S.N. program offers a rigorous and holistic education that integrates science, theory, and practical application, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding required to become compassionate and competent registered nurses.
