COURSE CURRICULUM

The Vocal Music Teacher Education, B.S. program combines rigorous coursework in music, education, and applied performance to prepare students for state certification as vocal music teachers. All students complete required liberal arts core courses in the arts, including Music: Fingerprints of Culture and Divas, Ingénues & Vixens, to provide a strong cultural and historical foundation. The program also fulfills the six-hour Global Studies or Community Engagement designation through ED 495, the Final Clinical Experience. The 44-credit hour education curriculum develops pedagogical skills, professional dispositions, and practical experience through courses such as Practicum, Developmental & Educational Psychology, Psychology of the Exceptional Child, Tests & Measurements, Multicultural Foundations of Education, General Methods & Differentiated Learning, Technology in Education, Reading Strategies & Interventions, Advanced Special Methods, Managing the Learning Environment, Final Clinical Experience Seminar, and Education Capstone. Vocal music state certification requires 44 credit hours in music theory, history, orchestration, conducting, voice pedagogy, and literature, supported by applied lessons and ensemble participation. Applied music instruction includes voice and piano studies to ensure technical proficiency, while ensemble participation develops collaborative and performance skills. Completion of ED 320 demonstrates technology competency. Together, this integrated curriculum equips graduates with the knowledge, skills, and experience to be highly effective, culturally aware, and versatile vocal music educators.
