COURSE CURRICULUM

The Special Education: Cross Categorical program requires a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare teacher candidates for K-12 special education and elementary education (grades 1-6). All students must complete core liberal arts courses in history, literature, natural science with lab, social science, and mathematics to ensure a strong general education foundation. History options include American Experience I or II, while literature choices range from African-American Literature to Global Literature. Science options include General Biology: Cells & Genes or Ecology & Evolution, and students may select General Psychology or Introduction to Sociology for social science. Mathematics requirements include Applications of College Mathematics, Mathematical Reasoning & Modeling, and College Algebra. The program also satisfies the six-hour Global Studies or Community Engagement designation through ED 495. The 90-credit hour Special Education core develops expertise in pedagogy, assessment, curriculum, and inclusive practices. Courses cover child development, psychology of the exceptional child, literacy and language development, elementary methods in math, science, and social studies, educational assessment, collaboration with families, transition and career education, and classroom management. Extensive field-based experiences, including practicum and final clinical placements, allow candidates to apply theory in authentic educational settings. Upon completion, graduates are well-prepared, knowledgeable, and confident educators, equipped to meet the diverse needs of students in both special education and elementary classrooms.
