COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Social Studies Education is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students to become effective middle and high school social studies teachers by combining rigorous academic coursework with practical, field-based experiences. The program requires completion of a core curriculum of 38–51 credit hours, including selected liberal arts courses such as history options like The Holocaust, Fairy Tales & History, or The Witch, as well as General Psychology, while fulfilling the six-hour Global Studies or Community Engagement designation through the ED 495 Final Clinical Experience. The 46-credit hour education component develops pedagogical knowledge and professional dispositions through courses including Practicum, Developmental & Educational Psychology, Psychology of the Exceptional Child, Tests & Measurements, Multicultural Foundations of Education, General Methods & Differentiated Learning, Technology in Education, Reading Strategies & Interventions in the Content Areas I and II, Advanced Special Methods, Managing the Learning Environment, Final Clinical Experience Seminar, and the Education Capstone. Additionally, students complete 36 credit hours of state certification courses, covering foundational social studies topics such as World Geography, Ancient and Modern History, American Experience, American National Government, State and Local Politics, Sociology, and Economics, along with electives in African-American History, American Cultural History, the Revolutionary Era, and thematic history courses like The Spectre of Nazism, Red Utopia, or The Great War. This integrated curriculum ensures that graduates possess the content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and professional attitudes necessary to educate and inspire future generations in the social studies classroom.
