COURSE CURRICULUM

Avila University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Theatre offers students a focused, professional education in their chosen concentration while benefiting from the broad perspective of a liberal arts setting. The program offers four distinct concentrations—Acting, Musical Theatre, Design/Technology and Management, and Directing/Producing—each designed to prepare students for specialized roles within the theatre industry. The Directing and Producing concentration combines creative leadership training with technical and performance insights. Students engage in coursework that develops their understanding of theatrical history and literature (TR 223, TR 324), along with practical skills in lighting (TR 253), costume design (TR 255), and stage management (TR 361). Hands-on experiences are integrated through practicums in directing and stage management (TR 288, TR 289), preparing students for real-world production settings. The curriculum also emphasizes acting proficiency (TR 391), business acumen (TR 377), and technical competencies such as computer drafting (TR 451). Advanced courses in directing (TR 463), acting styles (TR 473), and Shakespearean performance (TR 471) enhance both artistic depth and versatility. The program culminates in an internship (TR 495), offering professional exposure and industry connections. This comprehensive concentration equips aspiring directors and producers with the artistic vision, organizational skills, and collaborative experience necessary to thrive in professional theatre environments.
