COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre with a Musical Theatre concentration at Avila University integrates rigorous training in voice, music, dance, and acting within a liberal arts framework, preparing students for professional careers in musical theatre performance. Students complete 23 credit hours focused on developing technical proficiency and artistic versatility, beginning with foundational dance training in DA 110 Basic Tap or DA 111 Jazz Technique I. Vocal training includes eight credit hours of Applied Voice courses (MU 111–MU 412), complemented by two credit hours of Applied Piano (MU 115–MU 416) to enhance musical literacy and performance skills. Music theory and ensemble experience total eight credit hours through courses such as MU 151 Avila Singers, MU 251 University Singers, and MU 271–272 Music Theory I & II, along with diction training via MU 291 Applied Diction or TR 211 Voice/Diction and Dialects. Theatre studies integrate historical and technical training through TR 223 History and Literature of the Theatre I, TR 227 Stage Make-up, TR 253 Stage Lighting, and TR 377 Business of Theatre. Acting and directing courses, including TR 391 Acting III, TR 477 Advanced Acting, TR 463 Advanced Directing, and MU 395 Fundamentals of Conducting, develop performance and leadership skills. Students also study Shakespeare and theatre history, completing one additional course in music or theatre history, ensuring a well-rounded preparation for the demands of professional musical theatre.
