COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre at Avila University requires students to complete the general Core Curriculum of 38–51 credit hours alongside at least 24 upper-division hours in the major, with a grade of “C” or higher in all theatre courses. B.F.A. students must complete foundational courses totaling 20 credit hours, including TR 223 History and Literature of the Theatre I, TR 225 Stage Combat, TR 251 Stagecraft, TR 253 Stage Lighting, TR 271 Acting I, TR 272 Acting II, TR 281 Script Analysis and Directing Principles, TR 377 Business of Theatre, TR 425 Dramatic Theory and Criticism, and TR 499 Senior Project. In addition, students select a concentration to specialize their studies. The Acting concentration, comprising 32 credit hours, emphasizes practical and performance-based training with students required to enroll in at least one 3-credit acting course each semester, including TR 271, TR 272, TR 377, TR 391 Acting III (repeatable), TR 471 Shakespeare in Performance, TR 473 Acting Styles, and TR 477 Advanced Acting (repeatable). Additional courses in the concentration include TR 211 Voice/Diction and Dialects, TR 227 Stage Make-up, TR 255 Costume Techniques/Design, TR 324 History and Literature of the Theatre II, TR 361 Stage Management, TR 415 Playwright Seminar, and TR 463 Advanced Directing, ensuring students develop technical, creative, and analytical skills essential for professional theatre careers while maintaining a strong liberal arts foundation.
