COURSE CURRICULUM

The English concentration within the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts Studies is a 24-credit hour program designed to develop students’ skills in literature, language, and writing, fostering critical thinking, textual analysis, and creative expression. The concentration begins with 12 credit hours of foundational courses, including Composition II: Rhetorical Argument, Creative Writing, Rhetorical Theory, and Shakespeare, providing a strong grounding in diverse literary traditions, rhetorical principles, and effective communication. Building on this foundation, students select six credit hours from Category 1, which includes options such as Composing for the 21st Century, African-American Literature, Gender and Literature, Speculative Literature, Special Topics in English, Writing with Style, and Technical Writing, allowing for exploration of specialized writing styles and literary perspectives. In Category 2, students choose an additional six credit hours from courses like Authors and Identities, Reading Genre, Moments in Writing, Special Topics in English, and Persuasion and Performance, emphasizing advanced literary analysis, research, and expressive techniques. This concentration equips graduates with the analytical, creative, and written communication skills needed for careers in education, publishing, law, public service, or any field requiring strong critical thinking and effective communication. By blending foundational knowledge with flexible elective choices, the program nurtures versatile thinkers capable of engaging deeply with language and literature.
