The Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) major at Auburn University at Montgomery provides students with a comprehensive education in clinical laboratory science, combining theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience. The program prepares graduates to work in clinical laboratories and other professional settings, including research facilities, public health organizations, and biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries. Students develop competencies in essential areas such as immunology, hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, instrumentation, and laboratory management, ensuring they are prepared to perform accurate and reliable diagnostic testing.The curriculum emphasizes experiential learning, offering a progression of courses that integrate laboratory techniques and clinical applications. Foundational courses include Clinical Laboratory Orientation, Laboratory Safety, Laboratory Techniques, Phlebotomy, and Perspectives in Clinical Laboratory Science. Core scientific courses cover Clinical Immunohematology, Clinical Hematology, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Urinalysis and Body Fluids, Immunology and Serology, Molecular Techniques, and Clinical Instrumentation. Advanced and applied courses, such as Methods of Drug Analysis, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology, and Clinical Laboratory Independent Study, allow students to gain specialized skills, conduct research, and engage in real-world laboratory problem-solving.Students also participate in comprehensive review courses, capstone experiences, and independent study opportunities that enhance professional readiness and critical thinking.
