COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics Education (MHSE) program at Auburn University at Montgomery is a collaborative offering from the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology, specifically designed for students preparing to teach mathematics at the secondary school level. This program combines rigorous mathematical coursework with educational theory and instructional practice, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to teach grades 6 through 12 and earn an Alabama teaching certificate. Students develop a strong foundation in mathematical concepts through courses ranging from foundational topics like Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, and Precalculus, to advanced studies such as Calculus I and II, Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Discrete Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Complex Variables, Modern Algebra, and Topology. Applied and statistical courses, including Biostatistics, Applied Linear Algebra, Mathematical Statistics, and Data Science, equip students with analytical skills essential for problem-solving and effective teaching. Pedagogical and professional preparation is emphasized through field-based experiences such as the Mathematics Science Internship, Senior Seminar, Senior Thesis, Directed Research, and independent study courses, allowing students to integrate theory with classroom practice under the guidance of experienced mentors. Corequisite and support courses in Contemporary Math, College Algebra, Precalculus, and Elementary Statistics ensure that students master foundational skills before advancing to higher-level mathematics. Academic advising is provided jointly by both departments to guide students through degree requirements, professional education admissions, and internship experiences. Upon completion, graduates are prepared not only to teach mathematics effectively but also to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and a lifelong appreciation for mathematics among their students.
