COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics Education (MHSE) program at Auburn University at Montgomery is a collaborative offering from the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology, designed for students aspiring to teach mathematics at the secondary level (grades 6–12). The program combines a strong foundation in mathematics with professional preparation in pedagogy, instructional methods, and classroom management, leading to eligibility for an Alabama teaching certificate. Students receive academic advising from both departments to ensure they meet the requirements for graduation, professional education admission, and internship experiences.Students in the MHSE program engage in a structured sequence of mathematics courses that builds both conceptual understanding and practical problem-solving skills. Foundational courses include Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Precalculus Algebra and Trigonometry, and Finite Mathematics. Core courses in mathematics for teaching include Mathematics for Elementary Education I and II, Survey of Calculus, Calculus I and II, Linear Algebra, Biostatistics, and Discrete Mathematics. Advanced courses such as Applied Linear Algebra, Mathematical Statistics, Ordinary Differential Equations, and Math Methods for Engineering and Physics further develop analytical reasoning and applied problem-solving abilities. Students also gain research and professional experience through the Mathematics Science Internship, Directed Mathematics Research, Senior Seminar, and Senior Thesis.In addition, the program integrates statistics and data science courses, including Introduction to Data Science, Elementary Statistics, Inferential Statistics, Statistics with R Programming, Data Visualization, Linear Regression, and Machine Learning, providing graduates with modern quantitative and analytical skills applicable in diverse classroom and career contexts.By combining rigorous mathematics coursework, pedagogical training, and experiential learning, the MHSE program prepares students to become confident, effective, and adaptable mathematics educators. Graduates emerge equipped to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and a lifelong appreciation for mathematics in secondary school students, ready to make a meaningful impact in diverse educational settings.
