COURSE CURRICULUM

The Communication and Theatre program at Auburn University at Montgomery offers a wide variety of courses that combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience in media, communication, and performing arts. The curriculum begins with foundational courses such as Intro to Human Communication, Media and Culture, Film Appreciation, Small Group Discussion, and Public Speaking, which introduce students to communication principles, audience interaction, and effective message delivery. These courses help students build essential speaking, writing, and analytical skills needed in many professional fields.As students progress in the program, they explore specialized subjects in media, journalism, and public relations. Courses such as Media Writing I and II, Multimedia Journalism, Digital Audio Production, Video Production, Writing for Public Relations, and Principles of Advertising develop professional communication and media production skills. Students also study topics related to society and culture through courses like Intercultural Communication, Communication and Gender, Social Media, Public Opinion and Propaganda, and Media Law and Ethics. These subjects help students understand how communication influences public opinion, culture, and media industries.Advanced courses in the program focus on communication theory, persuasion, and research methods, including Communication Theory, Theories of Persuasion, and Media Research Methods. Students may also explore creative and performance-based courses in the theatre concentration, such as Fundamentals of Acting, Voice for the Actor, Stage Movement, Directing, Playwriting, Stage Lighting, Scene Design, Costume Design, and Theatre Administration. These courses allow students to develop performance, stage production, and storytelling skills.The program also provides experiential learning opportunities through Journalism Practicum, Media Practicum, Career Practicum, Communication Internship, and Theatre Internship. These experiences enable students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world professional environments. Additional opportunities include independent study, special topics courses, and an Honors Senior Thesis for students pursuing advanced academic research.
