COURSE CURRICULUM

The Operating Department Practice (Pre-Registration) MSc is structured over two years to provide a thorough blend of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional development required for a career in perioperative practice. In Year 1, students begin with modules such as Applied Pathophysiology and Preparation for Research, which establish a foundational understanding of human physiology, disease processes, and research principles essential for evidence-based practice. Introduction to Operating Department Practice and Principles of Perioperative Anaesthetic Care provide core knowledge and practical skills in anaesthetic, surgical, and recovery care, preparing students for clinical responsibilities. The Professional Practice Placement offers hands-on experience, allowing students to apply their learning in real-world healthcare environments under supervision. Year 2 builds on this foundation with advanced modules, including Perioperative Pharmacology, which explores medication use and its implications in surgical settings, and Contemporary Leadership and Innovation, which develops skills in team management, leadership, and service improvement. Perioperative Research equips students to conduct independent investigations, enhancing critical thinking and evidence-based practice. Surgical Care and the Principles of Surgical First Assisting deepen practical expertise in the surgical environment, while the second Professional Practice Placement consolidates clinical competencies. Together, these modules ensure graduates are fully prepared to register with the Health and Care Professions Council and practice confidently and safely as competent Operating Department Practitioners.
