COURSE CURRICULUM

The TESOL MA is structured around modules that provide a comprehensive foundation in language teaching theory, applied linguistics, and research skills, preparing students for careers in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Current Developments in Language and Applied Linguistics introduces students to key trends, debates, and advances in linguistics and language education, encouraging critical engagement with contemporary research and pedagogical practices. Second Language Acquisition explores how learners acquire additional languages, examining cognitive, social, and cultural factors that influence learning and informing effective teaching strategies. Theory and Practice in Language Teaching bridges the gap between academic knowledge and classroom application, equipping students with practical approaches to curriculum design, lesson planning, classroom management, and assessment tailored to diverse learner needs. Research Methods provides the tools to design, conduct, and analyse educational research, fostering skills in data collection, statistical analysis, and ethical research practice. The Dissertation module allows students to undertake an independent research project, applying theoretical knowledge and methodological skills to a specific TESOL-related topic of interest. Together, these modules ensure that graduates develop a strong combination of theoretical understanding, practical expertise, and research competence, enabling them to design and deliver effective English language instruction, critically evaluate pedagogical approaches, and pursue careers as teachers, curriculum developers, or educational researchers in international and multicultural contexts.
