COURSE CURRICULUM

The Religion MA is structured around modules that provide a blend of theoretical knowledge, practical research skills, and critical engagement with contemporary issues in religion and spirituality. Researching Religion introduces students to key methodologies, approaches, and ethical considerations for studying religious practices and beliefs, equipping them with the tools to conduct independent research. Religion, Media and Popular Culture examines the ways in which religion is represented, interpreted, and engaged with in media, literature, film, and popular culture, helping students understand the impact of cultural production on public perceptions of religion. Religion and Intersectionality explores how religion intersects with issues of gender, race, class, sexuality, and other social categories, encouraging critical reflection on identity, power, and marginalisation. Religion and Public Life considers the role of religion in society, politics, and public policy, highlighting its influence on communities and social cohesion, as well as its engagement with contemporary social challenges. The Dissertation allows students to undertake a substantial independent research project, applying theoretical and methodological knowledge to a topic of personal or professional interest. Together, these modules foster analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing graduates to critically evaluate religious and spiritual phenomena, engage with diverse perspectives, and pursue careers in academia, education, community work, policy, or further study within the field of religious studies.
