COURSE CURRICULUM

The Midwifery BSc (Hons) degree is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students for professional practice in maternity care, combining theoretical study, practical training, and reflective learning. In the first year, students build a foundation in midwifery through modules such as Universal Antenatal Midwifery Practice, Universal Intrapartum Midwifery Practice, Universal Postnatal Midwifery Practice, and Foundations in Professional Midwifery Practice, alongside their first Midwifery Practice Placement, where they gain hands-on experience in real clinical settings. The second year focuses on expanding knowledge and skills with modules including Public Health, Inequalities and Social Justice in Maternity Care, Legal, Ethical and Evidence-Based Care in Maternity Services, Additional Care in Maternity Practice, and Developing Professional Midwifery Practice, complemented by a second practical placement that allows students to apply theory in diverse healthcare environments. In the final year, students engage with advanced and specialized aspects of midwifery, including Obstetric Emergencies and High Dependency Midwifery Care, Midwife as a Scholar, and Professional Midwifery Practice, supported by their third placement and preparation for transition to registration. Throughout the program, students develop clinical competence, reflective and critical thinking skills, ethical awareness, leadership, and professional confidence, ensuring they are fully equipped to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care to women, families, and communities in contemporary maternity services.
