COURSE CURRICULUM

The Japanese, TESOL and Linguistics BA (Hons) degree provides an integrated study of English language teaching, linguistics, and Japanese language and culture, preparing students for international careers in education and communication. In the first year, students develop foundational knowledge through modules such as Introduction to Linguistics and Multilingualism, Key Concepts for TESOL, Descriptive Grammar of English, The Sounds of Language, and Japanese for Communication or Continuing Learners, building essential skills in language analysis, Japanese proficiency, and teaching principles. The second year expands on these skills with modules including Japanese in Use, Second Language Acquisition and TESOL, Phonetics and Phonology, World Englishes, Language, Gender and Sexuality, Analysing Media Discourse, Intercultural Communication in TESOL, Forensic Linguistics, Children’s Literacy Development, and Psycholinguistics, combining theoretical insight with practical application in multilingual and intercultural contexts. In the third year, students consolidate their learning through a Reflective Report, integrating experience, theory, and practice. The fourth year focuses on advanced skills and professional preparation with modules such as Japanese Language Project, Lessons and Materials Design for TESOL, Attitudes to Language, Child Language Acquisition, English Accents and Dialects, Communication Disorder and Difference, Japanese for Professional Purposes, and a Dissertation. Graduates are equipped with strong linguistic, intercultural, and pedagogical skills, ready to teach English in Japan or worldwide and pursue careers in education, translation, and global communication.
