COURSE CURRICULUM

The Japanese, Intercultural Communication and Linguistics BA (Hons) degree provides an in-depth study of language, culture, and communication, with a strong focus on Japanese language acquisition and intercultural competence. In the first year, students develop foundational skills through modules such as Introduction to Linguistics and Multilingualism, Language and Society, Descriptive Grammar of English, The Sounds of Language, and Japanese for Communication or Continuing Learners, building essential linguistic knowledge and practical Japanese language skills. The second year broadens this foundation with modules including Japanese in Use, Signed Language in a Social Context, Phonetics and Phonology, World Englishes, Language, Gender and Sexuality, Analysing Media Discourse, Intercultural Communication, Languages and Social Theory, Forensic Linguistics, Children’s Literacy Development, and Psycholinguistics, providing students with theoretical understanding and applied skills for analysing language use across social, cultural, and professional contexts. In the third year, students consolidate learning through a Reflective Report, integrating insights from their studies and practical experience. The fourth year focuses on advanced language and cultural studies with modules such as Japanese Language Project, Language, Identities and Cultures, Attitudes to Language, Child Language Acquisition, English Accents and Dialects, Communication Disorder and Difference, Japanese for Professional Purposes, and a Dissertation. The program equips graduates with strong linguistic, analytical, and intercultural communication skills, preparing them for careers in international communication, translation, education, and other global contexts requiring language expertise and cultural awareness.
