COURSE CURRICULUM

The War Studies and History BA (Hons) degree provides a comprehensive exploration of conflict, its causes, conduct, and consequences across historical periods. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of war studies, examining why wars begin, the role of media in conflict, and the social impact of war through modules such as Introduction to War Studies, Why Wars Begin, War and the Media, and War and Society. Students also develop essential research and presentation skills while exploring critical historical periods, such as the twentieth century in A Century in Crisis. The second year builds on this foundation by examining specific conflicts and historical contexts in depth, including the Second World War in War in the West 1940-45, the American Civil War, Soviet Communism, and developments in Britain, China, and the United States. Experiential learning opportunities and creative approaches to history, such as Writing Reality: Creative Non-Fiction, deepen understanding of the human, political, and social dimensions of conflict. The final year allows students to focus on advanced research through a dissertation in History or War Studies while engaging with specialized modules such as The American Way of War. Throughout the course, students gain analytical, research, and communication skills, equipping them for careers in research, education, policy, and international relations.
